Those same shingles that carried a 30-year warranty in 2010 are now backed by a Limited Lifetime warranty. Roofing manufacturers and roofing contractors were caught completely off guard. What was this going to mean to an already competitive roofing installation industry?
Well, it didn’t take long to find out with almost all major roofing manufacturers changing their warranties to match that introduced by GAF. 30-year or now Lifetime architectural laminate shingles were the most common shingles used for roof replacements in Central Iowa for years and now they are guaranteed to maintain that status.
How does the average home owner decide between products?
Well one area where there is still a difference in other protections offered by roofing contractors and roofing manufacturers. For example some shingles are backed by “Premium Protection or Sure Start Periods.” These are kind of like extended warranties for your roofing materials. Some you have to pay additional and others they are at no cost to the customer.
