The tradition of carving jack o’ lanterns to celebrate Halloween in the U.S. can be traced as far back as 1866, though the practice of carving pumpkins, turnips, and gourds for use as lanterns began some 10,000 years ago, according to anthropologists.

Regardless of where or when the custom began, it continues to be a beloved part of American Halloween celebrations every year. And this year will be no different as countless families will gather ’round the table, carefully draped in plastic or old newspaper and carve jack o’ lanterns that are silly, scary, simple, and complex.

This year, Buresh Home Solutions is adding to the fun by offering clever carvers a chance to win $100, $50, or $25 Best Buy gift card in their “Great Pumpkin Carving Contest!”
