Are you considering enhancing your outdoor living space with a beautiful and functional deck? Decking installation is an exciting project that can transform your backyard into a haven of relaxation and entertainment. However, like any home improvement endeavor, it comes with its fair share of questions. In this guide, we’ve compiled some of the most frequently asked questions about decking installation, along with expert answers to help you make informed decisions and embark on your decking journey with confidence.

Do I need to get a permit?

No, we will take care of it.

How much experience do you have?

We have been building decks since 2008.

Do you have references for your work, and can I contact them?

Yes, just ask!

Are you licensed and registered in Iowa?

Yes, we are. Our license number is C095734.

What type of warranty do you have on your labor?

Since the beginning, we have had a Lifetime Workmanship Warranty. Our belief is that no matter when it’s uncovered that we made an installation error it should be fixed for free including any ancillary work that may be needed. This is unlike many of our competitors’ 1-to-7-year warranties. This is important because an installation issue might not arise right away, and you could have more unexpected costs with other companies.

Do you have insurance?

Yes, we are fully insured including Worker’s Compensation for our employees.

Do you offer financing?

Yes. We offer a wide variety of excellent financing options through GreenSky or Medallion depending on your needs. To explore some of our payment plans and apply, visit our financing page.

Is there a supervisor on site?

Yes, each installation team has a crew lead

How long does it take to replace my deck?

A typical deck replacement will take about 5-8 days depending on size, is it 2nd story, etc. Very large decks or specialty-shaped decks can take 10-14 days

Do you help with design and size ideas?

Yes, we will meet you on-site and discuss what you like about your current deck, what you would change, size discussion, and how you want to use it to make recommendations

Does a deck increase my home value?

The answer is yes, but that isn’t the reason our customers replace a deck. They do it because they want a more useable space for family and friends

Why do you use TimberTech vs Trex?

Trex only partially wraps its capped composite decking whereas Timbertech fully wraps theirs to protect against moisture. Timbertech has a capped PVC option that is backed with a 50-year product warranty.

What are some of the benefits of using Timbertech decking?

Low Maintenance, 30-to-50-year product warranties, an excellent collection of colors and styles to choose from and made from up to 80% recycled materials.

Is composite decking worth the added expense?

Yes, if you look a life cost vs wood it becomes very easy for our customers to spend the extra amount.

When is the best time to replace my deck?

When you are ready for upgraded outdoor living space because we install decks year around.

Why do you recommend powder-coated aluminum railing?

We have found it to be the most durable in our climate.

Do you install wood decks?

We do 1 or 2 a year. The rest of the hundred plus decks our customer picks our low-maintenance option because with how we price there isn’t as big of a difference as our competitors.

What kind of lumber do you use for the framing?

All framing will be done using Treated or Glulam wood.

What kind of fasteners do you use?

We use hidden fasteners and plugs so that there are very few visible fasteners upon completion of your deck.

What are some signs that it’s time for a deck replacement?

Shifting or movement of the deck due to old footings. If you have a treated or composite deck, then you might see rotten or warping of boards. Hardware might be starting to come lose and no longer keeping decking material attached to the framing of the deck.

How does low-maintenance decking material hold up against patio furniture, sun, and things such as hail, snow & heat?

Some low maintenance material can stay up to 30 degrees cooler when exposed to direct sunlight. I don’t recall a time where hail, a shovel or heat has been an issue or caused any discomfort to past customers.  In no means am I saying it can’t happen I’m simply saying that the examples are few and far between. The low maintenance material is engineered withstand the elements we face from season to season as well as the everyday wear and tear from furniture and kids.

The post on my current deck look fine. Why do I need to replace them?

The key word in this question is “look” its not what we can see but what is the current status  with the material that isn’t visible to the naked eye. I would lose sleep at night knowing we put a product such at Timberteck Pro/Azek decking on a deck that was 20 years old if not older and didn’t replace the footings. The weight of some of the new product on the market can weigh up to 50% more then treated lumber. The last thing we want is for the additional weight of the deck to cause the older footings to collapse all because we thought they “looked fine”

What is the biggest difference between wood deck options and low maintenance deck options?

Overall cost for the life of the product. Capped composite or pvc options are going to require less maintenance. Wood deck maintenance can range from power washing to treating and staining which can add up in time and money. Secondly would be the product warranty which is 30-50 years with our low maintenance products.
